ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System

It's been 22 years since the publication of the first edition of ISO 9001:1987, but interest in its implementation and certification of quality management systems to its requirements is still not decreasing. Currently, more than 750.000 organizations and businesses in about 160 countries are certified to the ISO 9001 standard. What does ISO 9001:2008 cover?

ISO 9001:2008 specifies the requirements for the management of the following elements:

  • Quality management system - Here the standard sets out the general elements needed to establish the system itself and identify the relevant process as well as defining the process controls, data and documentation required to operate the system.
  • Management responsibility - This element sets out  the requirements relating to, leadership, allocation of responsibilities and commitment by the Top Management. The requirements relate to establishing an Organizational strategy in the form of Policy and Objectives , a structure for efficient internal and external communication, defining  responsibilities and authorities for  staff and appointing  a Management representative  who will deal with issues related to quality and establishing the management review process.
  • Resource Management - The standard requires that Top Management has identified and assured available essential for the implementation its strategy and achievement of the Organizational objectives including those related to the operation and improvement of the quality management system, as well as for satisfying the needs of customers and other interested parties. The standard defines the resources in terms of people, infrastructure, environment, information, supplies, natural resources and financial resources.
  • Product Realization - This element of the standard is described is at length in comparison  to the others so that the Organization implementing a quality management system understands what is required to assure effective and efficient operation of its main processes, as well as the supporting  networks  and related processes. The main topics covered in this part include:
  1. Planning of product realization
  2. Customer related processes
  3. Design and development
  4. Purchasing
  5. Production and service delivery
  6. Control of measuring and monitoring equipment.
  • Measurement, analysis and improvement - This last clause poses requirements that really mean a change in the Organization. The intention of this  clause is to provide Top Management with a tool for helping them with the decision-making process. An efficient and effective measurement process is to be in place, as well one for the collection and validation of  data so that this aspect of the standard can be met.
